A Clinical Study on the Facial Trauma in Children

Abstract
The author had investigated the 75 patients under 15 years of age with facial bone fractures who were admitted in Dept. of Oral and Maxillofacial surgery, Hospital of Chosun university from January, 1983 to December, 1992 retrospectively. The
results
were as follows:
1. Of the 904 patients with facial bone fractures, 75 patients were under 15 years of age(8%) with male to female ratio 1.3:1.
2. The incidence of facial bone fractures in the group of 6 to 10 years of age was highest of all(37.3%), but there were no statistically significant difference among the 3 groups.(P>0.05).
3. Falls were ranked as the predominent cause(52%), followed by traffic accident(41%), play ground(4%). These was no correlation statistically between Increased number of patient and annual growth rate.(P>0.05).
4. The monthly incidence of pediatric fracture was highest in the April and September(12.0%).
5. The incidence of mandibular fracutres(80%0 was the highest of all pediatric fractures, and, of mandibular fractures, the condylar fractures occurred most frequently(73%).
6. Of associated injuries, abrasion and contusion of soft tissue occurred most frequently(43%), followed by laceration(39%).
7. Of the managements of facial bone fractures, closed reduction was 71%(49cases), and open reduction 29%(20cases).
8. Intermaxillary fixation was done in 42(70%) of 60 patients withjaw fractures and its period was less than 3 weeks in most cases(83%). The monomaxillary fixation was done, for the most part, in the mandibular fractures and its period was also
less
than 3 weeks in most cases (62%).
9. The mean hospitalized period was 13.4 days, and 68 of 75 patients were treated within 1 weeks(91%).
10. The complications such as deviation of chin(4 cases), abnormal sensation(3 cases), infection (3 cases), mulocclusion(1 case) and TMJ ankylosis(1 case) occurred in the pediatric fracture patients.
